Postcards from Fontainhas, Goa
Fontainhas is an old Latin quarter in Panjim, Goa. It maintains its Portuguese influence, primarily in terms of Portuguese architecture. This area is characterised by narrow winding streets similar to those in many historic European cities. It has old villas and buildings with projecting balconies painted in the traditional tones of pale yellow, green, or blue, and roofs made of red coloured tiles. It was established in late eighteenth century. This area received UNESCO Heritage Zone accreditation in 1984. One gets transported back in time as you wander past colourful old Portuguese homes which are fine examples of Portuguese colonial architecture. Narrow winding streets and lanes, quaint shops, art galleries, bakeries, and restaurants serving Portuguese cuisine give this area its unique character.
White Door and Yellow Wall
What a beauty this was. If I were to live here, I would probably spend more time looking at it from outside. Wonderful entrance to this house in the pretty quarter of Fontainhas at Panaji in Goa. Although it was a hot summer afternoon, the sheer beauty of some of the structures made walking the lanes quite an involved exercise.
Engrossed
Came across this gentleman at a restaurant in Panjim, Goa where we had been to try out Portuguese cuisine. Had learnt that this place offers good quality home made feni. This gentleman was engrossed in his book. There was nice afternoon light from the door to his left. The light from one side with a background wall full of graffiti made it a compelling visual for me to shoot.
Looking out from a Goan restaurant
The family of this little girl was occupying the table adjacent to ours. They were a noisy bunch. Was it because of that or for some other reason, this girl chose to sit alone looking out from the balcony of this restaurant. (2014)
